7 Questions You Should Ask When Choosing a TMS provider (and our answers!)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an innovative and promising treatment for depression, anxiety, OCD. Finding the right treatment center where you can feel comfortable and well taken care of is crucial to ensuring the best possible outcomes. With the growing popularity of TMS, it’s important to be thorough in your selection process. Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing a TMS provider (followed by our answers, in bold):

1. **What are the credentials and experience of the provider?**

TMS is a specialized treatment, so it's vital to choose a provider with appropriate qualifications and experience. Ask about the provider’s education, board certifications, and specific experience with TMS. Ensure that they are trained and licensed in delivering TMS therapy. Providers with extensive experience in administering TMS are likely to be more skilled at optimizing treatment settings for individual needs.

2. **How many TMS treatments have you administered?**

Experience can significantly impact the quality of care you receive. Inquire about the number of TMS treatments the provider has administered and their success rates. A provider with a high volume of treatments is more likely to have refined their techniques and be familiar with a range of patient responses and conditions.

Dr. Mednick has been administering TMS since 2019 and has treated approximately 175 patients as of August 2024.

3. **What type of TMS equipment do you use?**

TMS technology continues to evolve, and different machines offer various features. Ask about the type and brand of TMS equipment used in the clinic. Ensure that the equipment is up-to-date and well-maintained. Modern machines can offer improved precision and comfort, which can enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

We use a Magventure system. Dr. Mednick has used a Neurostar system in the past so she is familiar with the differences and prefers the Magventure for patient comfort and treatment precision. Most research shows that outcomes are very similar across the different machines, so we feel this is less important than being comfortable with a practice. Check out this post to understand some of the differences between terminology you will hear.

4. **How is progress monitored throughout the treatment and how often will I see the doctor?**

Effective TMS treatment requires ongoing assessment to gauge its effectiveness. Ask how the provider monitors your progress and what metrics are used to evaluate the success of the treatment. Regular check-ins and adjustments based on your progress are crucial for optimizing outcomes.

We use weekly rating scales to track your response to TMS. The doctor reviews these in real time and makes adjustments if you are not having the expected response. She meets with you every 10 sessions, or sooner if you have any concerns at all.

5. **Do you accept insurance?**

Understanding the financial aspect of TMS treatment is essential. Inquire about the total cost of the treatment, payment options, and whether the provider accepts insurance. Some insurance plans may cover TMS therapy, so check if the provider can assist with insurance claims or offer financing options.

We are in network with Cigna (Evernorth/ Wellfleet) and Optum (UHC/Oscar/Oxford). We are out of network with BCBS and GHI/Beacon/Carelon, however with these companies we are almost always able to negotiate a network exception where they pay for treatment as if we were in-network. In all cases, we take care of all claims submission. If you have Aetna, Medicaid, or Medicare, we recommend you find an in-network provider instead. Out of pocket treatment is $300 per session. We work with a financing company that can help you pay the costs with an interest-deferred loan.

6. **Can you provide patient references or testimonials?**

Hearing from other patients who have undergone TMS can offer valuable insights into what you can expect. Ask if the provider can provide references or testimonials. Real-life experiences can help you gauge the provider’s effectiveness and patient satisfaction.

We have some testimonials printed/recorded here and we also post patient comments on Instagram. If you would like to speak to a patient who has gone through this, we can set that up for you!

7. **Do you offer a consultation before starting treatment?**

A thorough consultation before beginning TMS therapy is crucial. This initial meeting should allow you to discuss your medical history, treatment goals, and any concerns you may have. It’s an opportunity to assess the provider’s approach and determine if you feel comfortable and confident moving forward with them.

Dr. Mednick offers a complimentary video consultation while you are considering TMS. On your first day of treatment, you will also meet with her in the office prior to beginning TMS. She will go over everything with you in detail: how this works, what we expect to see, what else you need to do during treatment, etc.; and answer any remaining questions you have!

Choosing the right TMS provider is a significant decision that can impact the effectiveness of your treatment and your overall experience. By asking these key questions, you can make an informed choice and find a provider who aligns with your needs and expectations. Remember, taking the time to research and select the right provider is an investment in your mental health and well-being.
